How did you two meet[MV] Unfortunately there is no romantic story here. We met, late one evening, in the peak of auditors busy season, in the KPMG Cape Town offices. This was November 2011 and Theo had just come back after a stint in Cayman. I was contemplating my next career move and she managed to convince me to give Cayman a chance. The rest, as they say is history. I moved here in September 12 and Theo got a job and moved back here in November 12. Can’t believe we’ve been here for almost 3.5 years.

How did he pop the question?[MV] I popped the question on Boxing Day (December 26, 2014) in Chicago, Illinois. The plan was to go down on one knee, in front of the Buckingham fountain in Grant Park and have this majestic fountain go off between us and the city. It would have been a photographers dream. Unfortunately, when we got there, it was the middle of winter so the fountain was turned off. There went my grand plan of throwing coins into it. We still did that and, whilst making a wish or two, I managed to pop the question. She was very surprised.

[TF] Call it a woman’s intuition or him not being good at surprises but I kinda knew he was going to propose that day, especially as he made up an excuse of skyping his dad at a certain time and place. He did however have a photographer taking photos of us the whole time and an impromptu photo shoot in grant park afterwards. I think we were both on cloud 9 at the time.

Did you see each other before the wedding We did a traditional wedding were we didn’t see each other on the day until our eyes locked at the ceremony. We also didn’t see each other the night before (our last night before we became husband and wife) as we wanted our first night together to be special. We’ve been to a couple of weddings where they do a ‘first-look’ photoshoot on the day but, the feelings we had when we saw each other, for the first time at our ceremony, was special. One gets goose-bumps reliving the moment.

Describe your overall experience[MV] Breath-taking. I know this sounds a little cliché but it was really the wedding of our dreams. It couldn’t have been a more perfect day and I think my bride, Theo, must take a majority of the credit for it as she thought of it all. She’s good like that and I’m lucky.

What photography adviceGo with someone you feel comfortable with but ensure they are professional as well. Wedding photos can look staged so you want to feel natural, at ease during the entire process.

What was the experience like working with Rebecca? Rebecca was very professional from the start. Not only did she organize an after-hours meeting when she first met us but, from the start, she put us at ease. Her enthusiasm throughout the event itself was almost contagious even though the fighting through the pain barrier (apparently she was taking photos the whole time with a sprained finger). On the night, it didn’t feel like a vendor but a friend taking photos. Hopefully she can use Photoshop so I can look as good as my wife in the photos.

Tell us about a store that had everything you were looking for? One of the disadvantages of living in Cayman is that there are very few boutique shops with different selections of stuff. Thankfully a friend introduced us to Etsy and we found everything we needed on that site – it’s amazing.  They put you in touch with the designers and you can work together designing anything you want for the special day. It is extremely personal. We ordered a lot of items from this website.

What were you most nervous, anxiously about on the day? [MV] To be honest, I wasn’t really that nervous on the day itself – the Groom doesn’t really have anything to do. The only time my nerves overwhelmed me was when I went up to do my speech as the speeches before mine were pretty good. Thankfully I took my glass of wine up to the podium with me in order to numb any nerves.

How long have you been togetherWe were officially boyfriend and girlfriend on May 17, 2013 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We got engaged on December 26, 2014 in Chicago, USA and married in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands on December 19, 2015. Overall we have been together for almost three years but only married for roughly two months.

First song, father-daughter, mother-son? Our first song was a song called “I’ll be there” from the South African band, The Parlotones. Not only are their lyrics amazing but it also incorporated a South African element in our wedding. Unfortunately, due to both of us being blessed with two left feet, we skipped the father-daughter and mother-son dance.
